really happy to see a polish restaurant being this popular in york and had great expectations. the service and the food were both amazing. i appreciate vegan and vegetarian options on the menu and their own spin on the traditional polish food. vegan gołąbki- delicious! was hoping to try more but generous portion meant it was very filling. adore that food is served on bolesławiec plates. wish we were seated upstairs, or by the doors to the canal as the ‚man cave’ was not exactly my cup of tea. on a slightly pricier side, but worth a visit anyway.
I’ve visited this restaurant before with friends and absolutely loved it, even the 4‑year‑old in our group couldn’t get enough of the mussels in creamy garlic sauce. So this time I came with my boyfriend really excited to have the food again. We both started with the wild mushroom soup and then shared two mains: the ‘Gołąbki’ and ‘Hungarian Placek’. We finished with the pistachio cake. Unfortunately, the food wasn’t as good as on my previous visits. Everything was noticeably salty, at first it seemed fine, but with every bite the saltiness built up more and more. By the end we were hoping the sweet cake would balance it out, but the pistachio cake was quite bland and didn’t really taste of pistachio at all. It might have been the contrast with the salty dishes, but overall the flavours just didn’t come through this time. I’m not sure if there was a different chef or something else going on, but the quality didn’t match what I’ve enjoyed here before. I’ll definitely come back again because I know how good the food can be, and I’m hoping this was just an off day. Next time I’ll try a different dessert, but I wanted to share this feedback in case it helps.
Such an incredibly cozy restaurant and even lovelier staff. The food tasted like it was made with love, and brought me back to holidays with my Great Aunt and staying over at my childhood best friend’s house. Both Polish by descent, and would prepare the most delicious meals, filled with love and joy - and delicious ingredients! We will absolutely be back. Save room for dessert! You won’t regret it!
So unassuming from the outside but the menu was outstanding and the food full of flavour. We left with smiles on our faces and very full tummies. The hugerian goulash potato pancake was delicious beautiful chucks of soft beef in a crispy potato rosti with a side of home picked dill vegetables. The choice of homemade desserts was just such a dilemma, pistachio cake, and hazelnut and blueberry cake are both Highly recommend.
The best meals I had in York. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, they even brought our dog a bowl of water right away. We went for both breakfast and dinner, and it was definitely the best decision. The atmosphere was so warm and cosy, and the cute crockery gave everything that comforting, home-like feeling. Back in London, and I’m still thinking about their pancakes and schnitzel 🤍
